From Event Purchase to Post-Event: A Seamless User Journey with WooCommerce, Make and Mailchimp
Introduction
In 2026, we further developed the improved checkout process we had created for Empowered Academy in 2024. This time, the focus was on the complete customer journey: from purchase and preparation to the event itself and the communication afterwards.
We developed tailored customer journeys for different types of events, ranging from local and online events to international events. The flows were built using WooCommerce, Make and Mailchimp.
Needs, requirements, and challenges
My role as Digital Soulmate was to research which tools we wanted to use, taking factors such as cost and scalability into account. I then looked at how we could technically build each step of the process. I was also involved in the content, including writing copy, to ensure that it aligned perfectly with the target audience of each event.
The key wishes and requirements were:
• Different flows for different types of events: Make needed to automatically identify which event had been purchased and when the event was taking place. Based on this information, the correct flow would be triggered so participants automatically received the appropriate pre- and post-event emails.
• Completing and signing forms: An important part of the process was asking participants to complete and sign a form agreeing to the event's terms and conditions. For in-person events, such as a breathwork workshop, it was also important for participants to complete and sign a health declaration.
• The right email sequence and frequency: It was important that participants received the right information at the right time. This meant carefully considering the order of communications, what information should be sent and when, and how frequently participants should receive emails. We aimed to find the right balance between providing enough information and avoiding an overwhelming number of emails.

Reflection
Develop the concept. Build it yourself.
What I particularly enjoyed about this project was being involved from start to finish. I researched and selected the right tools, worked out the technical approach, built the system, wrote the copy and tested the complete customer journey.
Make is powerful, but there is a learning curve
At first, it took some getting used to and was quite time-consuming to properly understand Make. Sometimes I spent hours testing and debugging. But when you eventually figure it out and learn from the process, it feels very rewarding.
Research doesn’t always reveal every challenge
During development, you sometimes discover scenarios you hadn’t anticipated. For example, we decided to limit users to one product per checkout, as allowing multiple products would have made the underlying technology much more complex.
